Is it bad to use your car charger?

My hubby keeps telling me to stop keeping my phone hooked up to my car charger all the time, because it is bad for the battery! I don't carry my phone into work so I just keep it hooked up to the charger. That way it will always be charged. Is it bad?

My battery appears to be still functioning at its best and I have had it in a car charger for thousands of hours. I don't have that problem, so I don't think that is true.

Yeah, the car charger is just normal. I use it almost exclusively and I've never had any battery problems with any phones, which I've had for years.

Batteries constantly plugged in will see a reduction on lifespan. Its best if you let your battery die and then fully recharge it and unplug it - this way you get maximum capacity out of your battery. The more you have it plugged in unneccesarily the less battery life time you will get when not plugged in.

I think it would depend on what kind of battery your cellphone uses. Older phones sometimes use NiCad batteries, which develop "memory" and can't be fully recharged. Newer ones use NiMH (or even lithium ion) batteries which don't suffer that problem. Here's some info on the difference:

Not really, unless like what Tomcat said, old phones are dodgy and can't be fully recharged.

I think it is bad becasue most batteires are only made to be charged 500 times and if you have iti n your car every time you turn your car on the counter from 500 goes down 1 "not literaly". After less then a year you will need a new battery.

I keep my phone plugged into my the cigarette lighter until I see the battery is full. Then I unplug it. Then when the battery goes down a notch I plug it back in. I haven't had any problems so far.

Most batteries dont have a "memory" now. This may have been true 10 years ago, now not at all.

Maybe he dont mean your cell phone battery. Maybe its his car battery because it does eat a lot of the battery to run a charger.

I would have to disagree with that. People say the same thing about laptops, that you should let the battery die or get low then recharge it.
I don't think that keeping the phone charged up for hours while she's at work would affect it.

Actually letting your battery die is the worst thing you can do. That explains why you buy a cordless phone and it last 8 hours talk time and ends up dying down to only lasting about 30 minutes. I know from experience! lol.

ditto on that for cordless phones. Have had a problem with every cordless phone I have had for that reason. I have to agree when u said maybe he was talking about the car battery rather than the cell phone battery. I always charge my phone in the car, and my cell phone battery seems fine.

Yeah it sucks when a relative calls and ur phone dies

Well that depends on which relative it is, sometimes I wouldn't mind at all for my phone to die during a call, lol.

But anyways, I've had that problem with a few cordless phones myself.
