Need to know, before I buy a Blackberry!

I've been eyeing up the Blackberry Pearl for a long time, and I came very close to buying on from Ebay (new, not used) recently.
But someone told me that you need to have a Blackberry contract in order to use most of the features on it...?

I'm currently with Vodafone, and I want to stay with them. The main reason I want a Blackberry is so that I can use the internet (Facebook, etc!) on it - so if I will be unable to do that with my Vodafone sim-card, then I need to know before I buy one.

Can anyone shed any light on thsi for me?

Thank you in advance for your help.

If you are on a Vodafone contract then adding the Blackberry internet service (BIS) is reasonable especially if you add unlimited internet at the same time. Don't think BIS is available on PAYG although a mate has PAYG Blackberry service on T Mobile. At the end of the day the phone will work without BIS and so would the internet because the Blackberry would have a browser (or you can download Opera Mini for free) - but you lose the e-mail service that is one of the real plus points of a Blackberry if you cannot subscribe to BIS

DON'T DO IT!!!!!

I bought a Blackberry Pearl on PAYG and it was a nightmare. It's now on ebay and I can't wait to get shot of it. All the features that come as standard on every other phone on the market you have to pay extra for. It's a rip-off. For your own sanity dont buy one!
