Survey says video and music with cellphones isn't popular. What do you think?

Quote:
Most Americans don't want to rock with their phones or squint at the latest episode of "Desperate Housewives" on a tiny screen, a new survey said Thursday. The poll tosses a wrench into cell phone providers' efforts to make broadband applications like music and video downloads attractive to consumers. The survey, conducted on behalf of Royal Bank of Canada's RBC Capital Markets research group, interviewed 1,001 Americans and found that three-fourths said they weren't interested in watching TV programs or movies on their handheld. Nearly as many -- 69 percent -- said they didn't care to listen to music using their cell phone.
The reason, said RBC, was that people are spooked by the quick changes in mobile technology.

Personally, I prefer my ipod to listen to music, and I'd get an ipod video before watching movies on my cell phone, simply because of the quality factor. I do like my fancy ringtones, but they're not of excellent quality, and I wouldn't listen to an entire song on my cell.

I my self use my phone as a phone, my digital camera as a camera, my ipod nano to listen to music, and a dvd player to watch films. Sure it's fun to take pics with a camera phone, or download videos or music - but certainly nothing to rely on. They're all gimmicks.

They show technical exercise and development more than anything, and really just show how far technology has come. Comparing phones now to phones 10 years ago it's quite amazing. And handy yeah... But they certainly can't replace the other products for life

Cool Questioning the latest Cell Phone Survey...

I personally would question the survey. A thousand Americans (excuse me a thousand and one...as in Dalmatians) interviewed by a Canadian Marketing Firm huh? What ages? What income bracket?...Did they open up the phone book in Nebraska or in the heart of New York City? Blue or Red State?

Lets get real...the story does not say much about the survey. I am willing to bet this much… Americans will consume whatever products get marketed best. For example, if in King Kong 2 -He's Alive (Yes, I made it up), Naomi Watts has the latest and greatest music phone (Time Travel!...Before you ask the silly question...how did you think Kong was brought back to life...geez)...I am betting a segment of the country follows...any takers on the bet?

I think the survey is probably accurate enough. They might not have given the exact figures, but such surveys (especially done by one of our 5 major banks marketing firms) are bound to have been done to accuracy within a couple of percentage points.

And thus far, the only two people who have commented agree that cell phones are not for music and video. Not now, anyways, we'll see in 5 years.

I do agree with you though, Americans will consume it if it's there. There have been far too many awful TV shows that have survived to be able to argue against that.

Aaah Hannah, and here I thought we were making progress...repeat after me, “1,001 undefined Americans do not a good survey make”...It does not even say how the question was phrased...

Sample question: If it might cast you in a negative light as an un-Patriotic American, would you still listen to music on your cell phone...

While it might show the outer edges of a trend at best, I really doubt with the small sample surveyed and the lack of clarity in what was asked and to whom, that you can form a realistic picture...Hey maybe Canada is working on a top secret video-phone and just want to discourage American companies....let the conspiracy theorist come forth!...color me all shades of highly skeptical

I don't use the phone for music and/or video. I have an ipod for music, and when I want to watch a tv program, I watch it on tv.

What can I say Michaela, you are just not hip enough yet ...Wait 'til everyone is carrying the latest and greatest IPod-Mini-Phone...due out at the end of the year...then what?...just messing with you... ...So I stand alone on this issue...call me a visionary...call me a man taking the path least traveled...just don't call me on my TV-cell phone...

See I suppose I'm just a bit more trusting than you. I just assume the way the question was phrased, as well as the support from these forums which seem to point towards the survey being correct, indicates that the survey was done properly.

I have no conspiracy theories. If anyone is developing a superphone I'd put my money on Finland.

Aaah that sweet word "Assumption"...it kinda makes the world go round, don't it.

Not to really bring politics into this...but there was that famous Election Day Exit Poll in 2004 that was projecting a landslide Kerry victory… which the TV networks famously started to run with, only to end up with egg on their face...Someone failed to realize that it was not much of a balanced poll...being taken in the larger cities, it failed to accurately capture red state supporters...so much for unscientific polls, and those who jump on their bandwagon.

But okay, you are down for Finland. I always liked the Finns. Fabulous Runners. Excellent hockey players...don't really like their neighbors, the Russians and the Swedes all that much...but hey, they probably don't put much stock on this survey and will develop that own superphone, right?

Sounds about right. In a way it's just big business telling us we should like it. The reality is, they're little tiny screens, audio quality stinks. I can't stand to look at the stuff. Of course with all the MP3's in our lives, does anyone remember what CD-quality sounds like? Or how much art and info came with some old LP's? We're really losing something if we have to shink everything down to blah.

Japan's 90 million cell-phone users already play video games, download songs, exchange messages, read news, trade stocks, store digital photos and surf the Web on their tiny screens. Now, they're doing something less tech-savvy and more mundane: watching TV.

Free digital TV broadcasts for portable devices equipped with special receivers began in Japan's major urban areas last Saturday, although people, for now, can watch only the same programs shown on regular television sets in living rooms.

Well, well, well...Its catching on in Japan. Anyone care to change their answer?
