Text Mates

In our country, being dubbed as the cellphone capital of Asia, (according to one speaker), most of the young generation (and sometimes the oldies) have textmates, which are actually friends in text. Some of them lead to serious relationship while some others lead to fantasy.

I would like to get you to share on whether textmates are also 'in' in your country.

I would appreciate your replies in this post.

Thank you.

Could you further explain these "Text Mates"? Are they like penpals, or blind date type things?

Never heard of it before, geline. I'm in Canada, out on the east coast. Maybe someone out in BC has heard of it, but it doesn't seem to be here.

That sounds really cool, i would like to have a text mate.. but if you think about it maybe it would be anoying because its sooo hard to type on a cellphone. I know i get anoyed when i have to text back my friends. Is a text mate considered to be a text mate if you never met them before and only talk via text or could it be someone u know in person?

In America, a lot of the teenagers have a "MySpace" mate, kind of like a Text Mate except on the internet. I wouldn't spend 10 cents for every text message we send..

You know, it is a realization for me that texting is really not as widespread in your country than in ours. A textmate is like a chatmate but of course, when we chat over the internet, we don't pay anything per send but in our internet cafes where the younger generation also 'chats' they pay per hour of use of the computer/internet. In texting, it is somewhat 'expensive' coz imagine, you are going to pay Php1.00 per send? But you know, even if it is like that and our country is not that rich, it is still a trend in our place and believe it or not, some of them become true to life partners . I will start another thread on the stages of textmates for those who have less idea on what it really is.

I think that would be fun, except for the fact that they charge me for every text message that I send out. Far cheaper to do the email thing, where I can send multiple emails without charge.

This is the first that I have heardd of this and it sounds a little strange but I guess to sum it is just like an IM.

Well I am in Ontario Canada and I have heard of text messaging but not a text mate. I suppose its just a new way of having a penpal. I could see people using this service. I mean you can take your cellphone anywhere and have a conversation with someone through texting whereas with a computer you might not always have access to one.

Nope no textmates here in the UK unless you count people who send you a text after meeting them in a state of drukenness and you really dont remember who they were.

Only sort of textmates I know are the ones you pay single sites for. Great idea, but until the cost of texts comes down, or you get unlimited ones, I'd rather be phone buddies
