Little Monsters: Howie Mandel Hated Filming the Movie: 'I Thought I Was Going to Snap
The film was recently re-released on Blu-ray and included many new special features. In one titled "Call Him Maurice", Mandel spoke about his time working on the movie. Though he confirmed that he had fun on set, he hated the four-hour process that was necessary to transform him into the monster Maurice, which included wearing lots of latex in summer heat.
"Do not try this at home," Mandel said during the feature, which showed footage of his makeup application. "I mean it's a wonderful --Maurice is a wonderful character. It was a fun time; everybody was great. And there were funny scenes, but I was wrapped in latex. Do you know what humidity and latex does?" Mandel also admitted that the experience made him so anti-latex that he hates the word itself. "Now, I feel like I wouldn't do it again," he added.
Mandel has been very open about his OCD and ADHD, and about how that made it even harder to spend hours in the makeup trailer. "I can't sit. But you have to sit," he said. "Not only was it four hours of sitting, but four hours of -- I don't want to be touched. And four hours of [being touched], I thought I was going to snap." Then, he had to take on the persona of the happy and playful Maurice, though inside he was feeling quite the opposite. After filming, he had to sit still for another hour to remove everything. Directed by Richard Alan Greenberg and written by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, Little Monsters starred Fred Savage, Daniel Stern, Margaret Whitton, Frank Whaley, Rick Ducommun and Howie Mandel.
