Using a mobile phone in the USA

I plan a road trip in the USA in May. I would like to have a mobile phone to use whilst on the road, mainly for peace of mind in the event of a breakdown or other emergency. As far as I can tell the alternatives are:-
(a) unlock my mobile phone, which is a really ancient Nokia 2330 Classic and then purchase a pay-as-you-go SIM card once I am over there, or ...
(b) Buy a 'disposable' phone in the US and buy time on it.
I will be travelling around southern California and also visiting Hawaii.
Can anyone recommend the best option and best provider, please?

I think that disposable phones are best for little kids. If I were you, I would better choose the good old Nokia, cause with a pay-as-you-go device you’ll have to constantly keep track of the used minutes. What if you desperately need a when and your pre-paid minutes have already been used? The old-fashioned device is a lot more sensible choice – long battery life, stable connection…
