How do you call internationally?
I want to make international calls on my cell phone without being raped with charges. How would you suggest I go about this? Try and get a deal? Simply use regular phone cards with my cell phone? Any advice and suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

Yes, simply use the landline if you do not want to be 'raped'. lol
Or there is a great alternative. Use GTalk |

GTalk? Given the name may I accurately assume it's by Google? I've never heard of it!

any LD call is gonna get you with charges if you're not set up... I'd go landline if you gotta make it.

I think some companies offer where you can dial a prefix and call to most countries for as low as 3 cents.

Do it through your computer. There's lots of companies online that you can make the call pretty cheap. If you want to do it through the cell for some reason...buy a phone card and do it that way. MUCH cheaper.

There are advertisements in Yahoo, call from PC to telephone calls, about 1 cent per minute, don't know if this applies to you but I guess, researching on the net will really help you...

You took the first two ideas right out of my head! Either of those will cost much less than the "rape" charges. |

Calling international destinations is cheaper using VoIP, and faster too. There are many services offered by various companies. I use Skype alot and sometimes Yahoo Messenger with Voice (this one is good enough, and you can see the other person too).
If in emergency cases, I only text message the recipient and in minutes I will get them to talk to me, (there is a free text messaging thread somewhere in this forum) and save my money

I would have to go and tell you to use a phone card or just try to change your plan to allow you to call for a lesser fee.

I actually have long distance through a prepaid long distance company where you dial a 1-800 number and the number you want and only pay 1.9 cents to Canada and the USA, and its super cheap internationally. You can use it from your home and cell phone and there is no pin number to remember. You can program in the 1-800 number in speed dial and you are good to go. It's great.

I used to call abroad on my landline but now I've bought some call credit with Skype and its lasted me for ever, seems the best option to me.

If you need to call the UK from your mobile when you are abroad then perhaps this is the answer... I have just bought a Portugal SIM card from a company called 0044 UK and the calls home from Portugal should cost 15p a minute or thereabouts, compared to a whopping 60p or so if I dialled/received calls using my Orange UK network. Only problem, I first have to get my Orange phone unlocked so I can pop in this new Portuguese SIM (that is actually Vodafone PAYG). (We travel to Portugal a lot on business so hope to get a lot of use from this SIM).

I use Skype as well to make international calls. If the person I'm calling doesn't have skype I use a phone card via a landline.
It costs next to nothing. |
