Not 100% true. If their service is that bad, they will likely be in breach of the contract. The contract establishes not only that you as a customer will pay them, but also what service they will provide you with.

With regards to trying them out, in the UK at least there is a 14-day "cooling off period" on all contracts, during which you can terminate easily, however I would highly recommend looking for reviews of networks on the net or asking opinions on a forum like this, before making a decision.

if companies allowed you to do this they wouldn't be able to sustain customers over time, which would lower the quality of the networks.

uh there already is no contract on some cell phones

You guys must not know of http://www.mycricket.com/ . Cricket you have NO contract what so ever. If you want to stay with them a month you can. They also have great plans no one can beat .
Cricket $45 Unlimited Access Unlimited Local Calls throughout your Cricket service area
Unlimited U.S. Long Distance Calls (excluding Alaska)
Voice Mail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, and Text and Picture Messaging

The down fall is you must pay the full price for the phone like the Motorola RAZR is $299.00. Also most of there phones are not as nice.

This just in...according to CEO of Verizon in a recent conference, VZW will be the first cellular company to 'elimate' early term fees, so to speak. They are not really eliminating it, changing the terms and concept is a better way to put it. Starting (unofficially this fall, do the research), they will be pro-rating the fee based on how much time is left on your existing contract...
