Porting through a PAYG

Will try to keep this as short and simple as possible...

I am currently with Vodafone and want the new HTC TouchPro2 unbranded.
I can get it from a third-party retailer online with a Voda contract for £35-a-month, but will have to pay £200 to port my number as it would be classed as an 'upgrade'.

However, if I was currently with T-Mobile, O2 etc I could get it for free as I would be classed as a new customer.

Is it possible, therefore, to port my old Vodafone contract (which has now expired) onto a T-Mobile/O2 PAYG sim for a week or so, and then get the contract deal I want as a 'new' Voda customer and port my PAYG back across.

I've been told it can be done in principal... but has anyone actually done it?

In short no !

You can move your number from Vodafone to T-Mobile with ease but then Vodafone would not allow you to port back to get your own way.
