How secure are Text Messages ??
Hello there,
I am Vodafone User and i do actively use Text Messaging as the safest mode of sending confidential data like ATM Pins, Passwords etc... I need to know how safe it is to send data over text messages (sms) ? Can these be viewed by the Network Provider and be misused ? Please if anyone can throw some light on this... Thanks in advance. |

Networks under certain extreme circumstances can read text messages.
Personally I would not send such data via text message which essencially does not have any securityattached.

On rare occasions texts can be delivered to the wrong number too. Realistically though there isn't much someone can do with a PIN or password on its own if they don't know what it's for.

it's not in anyway the 'iron cage' of safety levels, that's for sure. the police can and have accessed network operator files to decipher when calls were made, to who and for how long, also texts and the information sent.
you see it in the papers all the time, some C list celebrity with the full gory text message conversations printed in national papers, it's no co-incidence. i'd say 95% of the time though, you'd be ok. whether it be the law, or the network provider that looks at any calls / sms made & sent, they'll always need to provide a genuine reason why they've delved into such things. |
