Help Required

Hi folks, this is my first post on here as i have just joined. Basically, i have 2 questions that i hope you can help me with. Firstly, i am in China at the moment and have been for the past 2 years, and until recently i had my prepaid phone from the UK with O2. However, it recently got stolen and so i got another phone sent over from the UK, but this time with a Vodafone sim. It turns out that Vodafone don't do prepaid roaming in China, much to my annoyance given that i only used it in emergencies, and then only for texting. Anyway, at first it was connecting to a Chinese network but then after a few days the connection went altogether, so can anyone tell me why this was, is it, as i suspect, that Vodafone realised that i was prepaid and then stopped it? I am bit confused as to why it was working and then it suddenly stopped. Also, why don't they do roaming with prepaid but they do with contracts, as there is no way i am getting a contract when i am abroad as it's utterly pointless?

My second question is this. I am thinking of buying a smartphone when i get back to the UK soon, but is it possible to buy an unlocked one without a contract? The reason i want this is because i am heading to Africa to travel for a year, and instead of taking a laptop, i would rather take a smartphone which i would then only use in free wi-fi spots. If i could buy one without a contract and unlocked then could i then just pop my vodafone sim( or maybe another network) into it, and hope that i have a roaming connection?

I am not too clued up on mobile phone technology so be gentle with me.

Thanks a lot for any replies
Ian

Ist question would be answered by contacting the network your using in china.

2nd question is you will need to purchase an unlocked smartphone.
Buying a sim free, unlocked smartphone will be more expensive than on a contract. Their are shops in the Uk such as CEX who sell used phones which have been tested to make sure they work before buying them off members then they put their own extra 12 month warranty on it.

If your thinking of an apple iPhone then you can buy these directly from an apple outlet but you will be looking at around £500.

If the Russian network is not connected, then may be the signal is weak in that particular area contact the service provider and check for more details. The bandwidth of the network should match the mobile phone and then only you can use the phone with the particular sim card.

Answer for our first question,
You mobile is locked to UK-Vodafone network. so it may have problems in getting used in China. Because as you said Vodafone don't do prepaid roaming in China. since it is network locked to Vodafone you can't use a Chinese network on your mobile.
Answer for your Second question,
Yes it is possible to buy either unlocked or locked Smartphone without contract. you can get some good deals from Ebay. If you get an unlocked smartphone you can use it in South Africa. But if it is software unlocked or Flashed mobile then it may have chances for minor errors in working. If it is unlocked through unlock code you wont be have problem in accessing it in South Africa. So confirm how it is unlocked before buying. Or its is safe to buy a locked smartphone and unlock it yourself using unlock code.

For your first question and second question, You can unlock your Vodafone locked UK mobile and smartphone using unlock code. You can get the unlock code from Classic Unlocking at low cost with complete guidance on unlocking process.
