Question about Google Voice and LG P500 Optimus One
Hi. I need some advice. Here is my situation:
After this month, I'm planning to get rid of my landline number that's provided by Time Warner. However, I will be keeping the high-speed internet service I get from Time Warner. But, instead of the landline, I'm planning to use my IPod Touch and my Mac as phones via wifi. I will be using Skype and Google Voice with them to make incoming/outgoing calls and for receiving voicemail when I'm at home.
I really like Google Voice, so I'd also like to get a cell phone that can use it too. That way I can have one phone number that works with my IPod/Mac and the cell phone.
I'm home most of the time, though, so my needs for a cell phone are minimal. I want to get an unlocked phone and then sign up for a prepaid plan. I have been using Tracfone, but I'm ready to switch.
After some research, I've decided that the cheapest phone that might meet my needs is the LG P500 Optimus One, which is being sold unlocked on ebay for $87.
However, I have never used Android, or a prepaid plan other than Tracfone, so I have a few questions:
- The LG P500 comes with Android version 2.2. -- is there a Google Voice app for that version of Android? I'm guessing so, but I just want to make sure.
- What kind of prepaid plan do I need that will give me the data coverage for allowing the Google Voice app to download/play the voicemails I receive?
- Again, I am new to smart phones: Will Google Voice even be able to download/play the voicemails on a prepaid phone immediately after the voicemails are left?
- Are there any carriers for prepaid plans that people recommend? I went to the T-Mobile site and found out that they do sell SIMS for the LG P500, but the site was confusing and I couldn't find out information on the cost of the SIM.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Okay, it's me again (the original poster).
I'm now considering Virgin Mobile. They have some LG phones that look similar to the LG P500 at about the same price:
Virgin Mobile | Compare No Contract Android-Powered and Feature Phones
They have a monthly plan with unlimited data for $35/month. I had been hoping for a plan more similar to Tracfone's. But I'm thinking that, even if I'm not saving much money since the Virgin plan is close to the cost of my Time Warner landline, I'll have more flexibility with the Virgin Mobile phone compared to the landline.
However, I'm trying to figure out if Google Voice will work with Virgin Mobile phones. I did a quick search online and some people are able to get it to work, while others can't. Some people are saying the Virgin Mobile voicemail picks up before Google Voice does. Anyone have any thoughts?
Virgin Mobile doesn't allow call forwarding.
But that may only be a problem when you use your Virgin Mobile number as your Google Voice number. I'm not planning to do that, which is why I'm confused. I'm planning to add my cell number to Google Voice, but the number I will give people to call is the Google Voice number, not the cell number.
