Smartphone with a good/strong antenna??

My mobile phone contract is coming to an end and I aim to get a new phone with the new contract. I live in a rural part of Cambridgeshire (UK) and am constantly having trouble receiving and making phone calls. I would like your suggestions and input to help me decide which mobile phone to purchase.
The phones I have had in my current location are a) Blackberry 9320 b) Motorola Milestone c) Nokia N97 mini.
I didn't have a problem with calls using the Blackberry. I got rid of it as I didn't like the interface and it kept crashing. I could not, for love or money, make/receive calls or texts with the Motorola. The Nokia is bad but not as bad as the Motorola. All used the same sim/network.
Now, this tells me that the Motorola must have had a better antenna built into it. Which is odd as I've read that Motorola's have the better antennas.
I have looked on the Network Antenna coverage map and I can see that two miles from me there are Masts for Vodafone and 02 (both on 900Mhz), Orange and T-Mobile (both on 1800Mhz), Orange and 3 (both on 2100Mhz). I need to focus on 2G to be safe.
The phone I would like is a Samsung S4 but I am concerned with it being a smartphone the antenna/reception will be bad that I cannot make/receive calls. I am now wondering if the Blackberry Z10 is the way to go as, although this is a smartphone too, Blackberrys seems to have a better antennas, or at least the Blackberry 9320 did.
It would be nice if I could have an Android OS as they are some nice golf apps and customised keyboards, plus the S4 has a bigger screen than the Z10 (Z30 too expensive).
Do any of you guys know which smartphone released in the last two years have the best antennas built into them? I am half contemplating buying a 2005 flip-phone as I know that would work but it's not exactly luxurious.
Your prompt responses will be much appreciated. Thanks xx
