My Moto E is using up credit, but I cannot see how

Hi, I am getting used to the Moto E bought last week (my first mobile phone!)
and one thing that puzzles (and worries) me is that after inserting an O2 SIM card and buying O2 credit, every day I receive a message saying I have used some of the credit up.
I don't understand this as my computer and modem are both on from 8am to 10pm and I only use my Moto E during that time so any internet usage would be through wi-fi (the wi-fi is always switched ON on the Moto).
So how I am using credit each day? Is the phone active with the internet during the night when my modem is switched off?

Secondly, is there any way of stopping this? I suppose I could remove the SIM card whenever I am not using the phone, but that seems excessive apart from having the sheer hassle of taking the back off each time (why didn't Motorola include a slide off/on backing plate?!)

If anyone can shed any light on this, I would be very grateful.
