What is unlocking?

I keep seeing people talk about unlocking, and I'm not sure what exactly that means. So you can see why I'd want to know, I feel I'm being left out.

It's basically just unlocking the mobile so you can use it on all networks. So say I had a phone that was on Vodafone and I couldn't use any other sim card, I would be able to unlock it so it works on any network.

Hope that helps.

I agree.Unlocking of phones can be applicable only on phones with Sim Card.In unlocking phones you can use Crux Calculator or you can use flash which is a little bit expensive.

So do you have to pay more when you use it on all networks, and are some phones automatically unlocked?

Well, you can only use one sim card at a time and the cost all depends on what sim card you are using.

And yes, some phones are unlocked as soon as you have bought it, some others have to be unlocked.

Are all phones that have a sim card able to be unlocked though? and just curious about phones from different countries. I was looking on ebay and saw some good deals on unlocked phones in the USA. If they are unlocked would I be able to use a phone like that in Canada?

Some are, some aren't. Chances are if you have a prepaid phone and you try to change the sim card, your phones screwed up.

Thanks, I will watching out for pre paid phones then. Just seems like u can get a real good deal on ebay, but if I can't use the phone in Canada then it doesnt work out to be such a great deal afterall so this is good to know.

The best place to unlock your phone is in a mobile phone shop that isnt a big label, e.g phones 4u. Back-street shops with no chain store name is best because im not too sure how legal unlocking actually is
