Initialize a new battery.
Avoid fully discharging a lithium-ion battery
Keep the battery cool.
Charge your battery correctly, in accordance with its type.
Store batteries properly.
Clean the battery contacts on the battery and on the phone.

Calibrate the battery by letting it discharge to around 20% and then charge to 100%.

The battery itself will reach optimal output after a few discharge and recharge cycles.

Regularly top it up.

In general, avoid using the phone while it is charging. This is called parasitic charging and this kind of usage can apparently be quite damaging.
