Question about blacklisting?

When you report a phone stolen so its blacklisted, does the phone detect that it has been stolen?

Dont worry, I am not planning to go stealing phones, I need the info for something I am working on.

On reporting the stolen/lost handset to the police and network they will block the fones serial number known as the imei.

Anyone trying to use the original sim or their own will not get far as none will operate.

Only the network can legally lift the block.

Some more unscruploious person with the required software can erase the imei and graft one onto it. This is HIGHLY ILLEGAL and currently gets a caught person 5 years in prison.

Yes, but will the handset itself know its been blacklisted? Can it be programmed to detect its been blacklisted?

Just so you know I dont plan to steal someones phone or anything, I want to make a app that will reset the phone if it gets stolen, and to do that the phone needs to know its been blacklisted.

I dont see the practically of such a application.

When you report the handset as lost or stolen the network block the imei thus the handset is programmed to block all sims thro is security system.

If you regain the handset a fone call back to the network will open it back up.

The application you propose would allow the user to open up the lost/stolen/under fraud investigation handset themselves which is illegal.

Yeah but even with it blacklisted the phone will still turn on and everything will work that dosent need a network like looking at my data.

Also, if you take a blacklisted phone to another country it will work fully.

Yes some functions will operate apart from the primary function which is the calling and sms features, along with gprs.

I have never had to try this so im not fully sure. I assume from your post that you have. The whole point of this feature is to stop thieves and fraudsters and im sure you would support me in saying that the more ways the authoraties and networks can stop this the better.

I don't fully grasp it myself. Does a phone need to be registered first with the network to be barred, contract or pay as you go?

There was a news report on the internet about it on Engadget or BBC Technology or something saything that something like over 50% of all stolen phones are shipped to other European countries as they work over there because the blacklist is not the same worldwide, if a phone is blacklisted in England it will still work in Italy as the networks there dont have it on any blacklist saying its stolen.

Yes, I think there should be more to do against phone theft, that is why I am working on the app. I am thinking I may be able to do one for Symbian smartphones that deletes system files so it wont boot anymore, but to do that the phone needs to know its been blacklisted.

No you cannot delete the files remotely.

Its always best to turn on all security features of your handset.

Some handsets allow you to protect files and folders and to stop unknown sims from being inserted.

Sim locks stop theives from using your credit etc.

Sd memory cards allow passwords to be set.

I would suggest that handsets being shipped out to other countries are actioned by set up rings and they probably would factory reset the handset and wipe off all data to stop any evidence of a previous owner.

Its a shame the networks cannot send a link to the handset to de activate the handset fully, so it would not even turn on.
