K800i - Screen very dark

K800i - LCD working OK except screen always very dark
Overnight my screen has suddenly gone very very dark. I can read the LCD, just about, with a bright torch and I can see that it is otherwise performing OK.

I did not do anything to cause the change in the screen but I have now:
(1)
Flashed the sofware - firstly using SE's website and when that did not fix the screen, I upgraded to Wotan CID53 (whcih loaded easily).

(2)
Taken the phone apart to see if there was any obvious fault or if there was an obviously faulty "backlight" but it seems that there is no separate backlight / bulb or LED.

So I assume that the fault is not with the software and that there is no replacement bulb or LED needed. I guess the fault is in the hardware either I need to replace the LCD (but why is it working perfectly otherwise) or there is something in the "chip" that is faulty.

Any ideas on how I can narrow down the fault further would be much appreciated. Cheers.

It really would be simple for the lcd to be replaced however you have voided the manufacturers warranty by opening the handset.

Best choice now would be to ask an indipendant shop to action the repair for you.

LCD's are rather glitchy and can fail in all manor of ways.

I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Dark Screen

Lee,

Thank you - I know installing a new LCD can be tricky (very easy to snap off small plastic securing clips) but as my K800i is out of warranty, I thought I would do it myself. I have already opened the phone to check for obvious faults. I have also installed 2 screens in my other phones in the past.

Lee, can I ask - Do you know if installing a new LCD will fix my problem ? I know it is not a software issue and there is no separate backlight.

You know how the screen is dark when the keyboad is locked but comes alive when one unlocks the keyboard ? Well on my phone, the screen does not enliven / become bright when I unlock the keyboard.

Hi,

Really a case of suck it and see if you want to replace the screen yourself. It may or may not resolve the issue.

The only true way is to book it in with a mobile handset engineer for a full diagnostic.

I have fixed this problem before at work... Well I didn't actually, the phone had liquid damage and its unrepairable, did you check for liquid damage? It will be white, look like crack cocain stuck to your mainboard lol...

If you have liquid damage, don't bother trying to repair it, liquid damage can cause the most random problems and can't be repaired....................

You have a warranty but you've break the rule you've open the handset Now the only thing to do is bring it in a cellphone repairer don't fix it with your self.

Yes thats true but with the K800i its not so easy to tell if someone has opened it, and if this phone came to me and I thought it had already been opened, I would still try fix it because if I say that the customer has already touched it, they can just denie it and it just causes more problems, its easier just to fix it. I have never put a phone through as being meddled with by customer, this is also because maybe this phone had been previously repaired by authorised people before us, we don't know this.

Also for Liquid damage and Physical damage, we are not suposed to repair these because if the customer does this it breaks the warranty, but if the parts that are affected can be repaired its best to, because the customer can also denie this, the only time you say liquid, or physical is when the mainboard has been affected and you can not repair it.

Dark Screen - update

Hello Gents , thank you for your guidance.

I bought a brand new K800i (the "New K800i") last week because I feel it is the best phone for me. I have found it has the best battery standy time of any regular mobile / Cellular / Handy phone I know - that is since the demise of my old Nokia 6310i.

However, I am still very interested in fixing my old K800i, as a hobby really. I have put a new screen in the old K800i but this has not fixed the very Dark Screen problem. I have updated the flash / EPROM/ software trying both Sony Ericsson and Wotan versions but it makes no difference.

I wonder, is it possible for one to fit the Screen->"Motherboard" multi-connector plug say 0.25mm out of alignment with the recipient socket so that the plug appears to fit snugly but the wiring connections are, say, one wire out of alignment. If so would that have the effect of making the LCD screen dark but operate perfectly in every other respect ?

The old K800i is long out of warranty.

Any steer would be much appreciated.

Thank you.
