Carphone Warehouse - Illegal?

I have just had what is the worst shopping experience I've ever encountered, and I need some advice. Sorry if it's a long post, but some things take a while to explain.

I went into Carphone Warehouse today with the intention of buying a new mobile to replace my rubbish 2 year old one that doesn't even alert me when people are calling. I'd done all my research and settled on a Samsung Tocco on PaYG.

The price in store was 120 (I wanted the phone on 02), but I decided to haggle, at which point the store assistant said they had an offer on at the moment, and could do the phone half price, whilst putting me on a contract at 8.50 per month. I tossed the idea over and concluded I probably would save money doing it.

I was in a rush, as I was supposed to be getting a lift home, so I asked the guy how long it'd take to sort the deal out - he says a few minutes. 20 minutes later I'm still at the counter, and he can't get the deal to work on his computer. He then starts doing sales crap, and asking if I wouldn't prefer the Sony phone at the same price, as I'd said I'd use it as an mp3 player. I said no, I'll stick with the tocco. He then comes up with a new contract, which actually works out better for me after I do some quick maths, so I say yeah go for it. 10 minutes later, it still isn't going through, and I have to go outside to take a (pissed off!) call as to explain why I'm not at the car.

I go back in there and he says he's made the deal work so I pay. However, he then goes on to explain that the only way he can do it is by giving me a second phone along with the tocco (!), that I should sell at a second hand store to reclaim the money on. The second phone is the Sony he was just talking about earlier that retails at 100! By this point I'm rushing to get out of there, and I just accept this whilst thinking it's really odd. I sign where he says, and am just about to leave when he puts the SIM in the bag, and the SIM is for the 3 network, not 02!

I question him on this, and he goes '3 just piggybacks the 02 network, and you can use the minutes across any network'. I cut my losses and run to the car. Upon getting home, I discover 3 doesn't piggy back 02...

As you can imagine, I'm pissed off - I went in expecting to have a relatively quick and pain free shopping experience, and instead end up with that bullshit. I haven't opened the phones or used them or anything.

What I want to know is:

a) How the hell did the guy manage to legally throw another 100 phone into the deal for free?

b) Why was he offering a deal he couldn't even do, when he's working in a major chain store?

c) Isn't misleading a customer on what they're actually signing up for pretty criminal? I don't want to be on 3, and yet he's now contracted me to them!

Do I have a leg to stand on here?
