SE w995 on Orange

Apologies if this is in the wrong place -- it's about a handset, but on a specific network.

I've pretty much decided on getting an SE w995 as my next phone as I want to stop having to take both a phone and my iPod Nano with me to and from work, and CNET seems to score the w995 as a pretty good music phone (not counting the iPhone--which I don't want for a few reasons).

After phone and music functionality, the things I was most bothered about were: general internet browsing, sat nav, and BBC iPlayer.

I'm currently on Orange, get my next handset free, and liked the Orange-exclusive red w995 BUT:
  • the Orange store sales staff were not able to explain if sat nav was actually available (yes, there's built in GPS, but does Orange allow a mapping application to be installed?)
  • I can't work out from various stuff I've read online if BBC iPlayer actually works (from what I've read online, it should do, but the store staff seemed to think not, and I don't know if there's a specific issue about Orange allowing access that's on top of issue about the iPlayer on w995s that the BBC's iPlayer website already refers to (http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.u...w995_download).
I also read somewhere that Orange possibly blocks wifi access, forcing you always to use Orange 3G internet.

Has anyone got this handset on the Orange network who could share their experiences so far of the above with me? I was thinking possibly of switching to Three instead, as I understand their mobile internet is better, but it'll cost me a bit more each month and...well, I wouldn't get the red phone LOL .

Thanks in advance for any helpful comments (including if moving to Three would be the worst decision ever).

J

Hey there,

I have the W995 on orange network.

Firstly, it comes with Orange maps and google maps, hopefully that answers the first question...?!

Secondly, the BBC iPlayer works fine when I use my phone with wifi connection, however I have ahd a problem using Orange internet connection and bbc iplayer in the past. I did have a bad signal at the time so not sure how much of that can be blamed on the problem.

Orange doesn't clock wifi access, I posted a reply to this on another post - it's just a bit tricky to work around it.

On a Nokia you can just chose "connect using" and chose what way you want to browse but SE made this really bloody hard, you have to turn local connection on, connect via wifi first, wait a few secs then go into the browser in order to browse via wifi instead of orange internet. Which IS a pain in the butt and they made it slightly harder since the update came out.

The update has a really cool facebook app by the way, the little icons fly around the home screen and there is facebook option right inside messaging menu.

I returned an N97 to get this and I'm so glad I did.
No faults so far with W995, just frustrating to get wifi browsing going and the pc software freezes a lot, it's pretty rubbish!!

Thumbs up

This is a fantastic reply. Thanks, Jen. I'm probably going to go straight down the Orange store tomorrow now.
